BE 3: The Chameleon That Changed Colors – Ramakrishna Paramhansa Series

A soft morning light danced through the windows of Ramakrishna’s room at Dakshineswar. The Ganga whispered its gentle secrets outside, and the air carried the sweet fragrance of jasmine flowers. Ramakrishna sat peacefully in his favorite spot, his simple cloth wrapped around him, his face shining with quiet delight. A few young disciples sat close by, their hearts already feeling warm and open just from being near him.

He looked at them with those loving, twinkling eyes and smiled like a child sharing a beautiful secret. In his soft, playful voice he said,

“Come, my dear children. Let me tell you about the chameleon that lives in my garden.”

The Lovely Little Creature in the Garden

Right behind Ramakrishna’s room, in a quiet corner of the garden, there lived a beautiful chameleon. It was small and delicate, with skin that could change color in the blink of an eye. One day a man walked past and saw it resting on a green leaf. “Look!” he cried happily. “The chameleon is green, just like the fresh grass after rain.”

A little later another man came along. The chameleon had moved to a yellow flower. This man stopped and said with great certainty, “No, no — it is yellow, bright and golden like the morning sun.”

Then a third man arrived. By now the chameleon had climbed onto a bright red hibiscus. He looked at it and declared firmly, “You are both wrong. It is clearly red, as red as the evening sky.”

The three men began to argue. Their voices grew louder and louder. Each one was sure he was right. Each one thought the others were blind or foolish. They stood there in the garden, waving their hands and shaking their heads, completely forgetting the little creature itself.

The Chameleon Just Smiled and Changed Again

All this time the chameleon sat quietly on its branch. It did not argue. It did not get upset. It simply changed its color once more — this time to a soft, peaceful blue — and watched the men with gentle amusement.

The men kept shouting. Green! Yellow! Red! They were so busy fighting over the colors that they never noticed the chameleon was always the same beautiful little being, only wearing different lovely dresses of color.

Ramakrishna paused here. His eyes sparkled with mischief and love. He leaned forward a little, as if sharing the funniest and most wonderful truth in the world.

Ramakrishna’s Gentle Lesson

He looked at his disciples and said in the warmest voice,

“That is exactly how it is with God, my children. One person sees Him in one beautiful form and says, ‘God is like this.’ Another sees Him in a different form and says, ‘No, God is like that.’ A third sees yet another face and argues with the first two. They fight and shout and forget the simple truth — God is the same loving Being, only appearing in many different colors of beauty.”

The disciples sat completely still, their faces soft with understanding. A quiet smile began to spread across the room, as if a heavy little burden had suddenly floated away.

Ramakrishna laughed his small, happy laugh — the one that always made everyone feel the world was a safe and joyful place. He picked up a tiny flower from beside him and held it up gently.

“See?” he said. “The chameleon does not mind what color you think it is. It just keeps living in its own sweet way. And God is exactly like that. He does not get angry when we see Him differently. He simply waits with open arms, full of love, until we stop arguing and start smiling.”

The Room Filled with Peace

For a long moment no one spoke. One disciple felt a deep, easy peace settle in his chest, as if all his own arguments about life had quietly melted away. Another smiled so naturally that his eyes crinkled with joy. A third breathed slowly and felt lighter than he had in months.

Ramakrishna’s face glowed with the same gentle light. He looked at them with such tender affection that their hearts felt wrapped in warmth.

Why This Story Still Brings a Smile

Even today, whenever you remember this simple tale of the chameleon, something beautiful happens inside you.

You stop feeling the need to prove your own color is the only right one.

You stop arguing with others about how God should look.

You feel light and free.

A soft smile comes to your lips without any reason.

Because deep down you remember: God is the same loving Presence, wearing countless beautiful colors — and all of them are true, all of them are His, and all of them are waiting to make your heart smile.

And Ramakrishna, with his twinkling eyes and warm voice, is still sitting in that garden of the heart, saying softly, “Look, my child. Stop fighting over the colors. Just enjoy the chameleon — and feel the joy that never changes.”
