Female Foeticide – A Sonologist’s perspective

Unnecessary harassment for SONOLOGISTS

The recent ” sealings “of ultrasound clinics by BMC officers does not necessarily mean that all sonologists who do not adhere strictly to the ” CLERICAL JOB ” of maintaining ” RECORDS” of all sonographies are part of the sonologists who do the ” DIRTY ” job of revealing the sex of the fetus and consequent feticide.

In fact the whole SONOLOGIST community has got a BAD name just of because of a few black sheep in the profession. I strongly disagree to the method adopted by the Govt of India to improve the sex ratio. Just by sealing the USG centres the problem cannot be eradicated because the problem lies within the society. My question is why the PERSON who asks for the sex of the unborn should not be equally or rather more harshly punished because he / she is the one who wants to know the sex of the fetus and not the SONOLOGIST. Matter of fact the SONOLOGIST ( like me ) is least bothered about it. I have been following the practice of not revealing the sex even before the law was implemented ( even for myself and my family ). It is a question of one’s ETHICS and MORAL RESPONSIBILITY. Unfortunately the PNDT law never ever could counter or reduce the incidences of female foeticide. There should also be a law to punish the people who ask for sex determination. Then and then only the problem can be corrected. Because if there is no demand from the society then the SONOLOGIST is least interested in it. It is the issue of changing the people’s mind set. Why after any delivery the first question asked is ” IS IT A BOY” and not ” IS THE NEWBORN HEALTHY ” The process of discrimination starts from there itself. So it is an issue of social awareness rather than the “SONOLOGIST”. Why the burden of maintaning the sex ratio in the society be only on the SONOLOGIST and not on the society ?. The process of social awareness has to be started by all of us. We ourselves should not ask the question because by asking about the sex of the fetus we belittle the ” CREATOR ” it self. Why people worship GODDESSES and kill female fetuses ?. In fact in some places new born baby girls are put in cauldron of milk and murdered. There in lies the problem. Surprisingly the majority of the questions are asked by the ” MOTHER’S N LADIES “. They themselves want to have a baby boy rather than a girl for reasons best known to them. Nature or GOD whatever name you give has its own way maintaining the balance of every living thing on the earth. Then why we INDIANS are worried about it so much.

I like to conclude with my POEM which I print with all my reports.

Be it a girl; be it a boy; Your new born baby is a bundle of joy !

Be active against sex discrimination;

It starts from you; just stop asking for it!

Remember that we all are in to this world because of ” HER” !

Killing a girl fetus / child is like killing our “MOTHER” !

Save the ” GIRL CHILD “; Save our ” MOTHER ” !

Let us not insult our ” MOTHER ” !
