Devi Suktam, also lovingly called Tantroktam Devi Suktam or Aparajita Stuti, is a sacred hymn from the Devi Mahatmya (also known as Durga Saptashati or Chandi Path). This beautiful scripture is part of the ancient Markandeya Purana. It appears in Chapter 5, where the gods (Devas), troubled by powerful demons like Shumbha and Nishumbha, turn to the Himalayas and offer this heartfelt praise to the Supreme Goddess.
The Devi Mahatmya itself is a timeless treasure of 700 verses that tells the glorious story of Goddess Durga’s victories over evil. Sage Markandeya shared these divine revelations in the Purana. In the story, the gods sing this hymn directly to the Divine Mother, remembering her promise to protect the universe whenever dharma is in danger. It is not the Vedic Devi Suktam from Rig Veda (by Vak Ambhrini); this is the tantric and Pauranic version, full of deep love and devotion.
What is it all about? In simple words, this stotram opens our eyes to the truth that the Divine Mother (Mahadevi) is everywhere — inside every living being and in every experience of life. She is both the gentle moonlight and the fierce storm. She is Prakriti (the loving energy that creates the whole world). We bow again and again to the Great Goddess, the Supreme Mother who is all-auspicious and full of infinite goodness. रौद्राय नमो नित्यायै गौर्यै धात्र्यै नमो नमः

We salute the fierce yet eternal Goddess, the shining Gauri who supports and nourishes the whole world like a caring mother. कल्याण्यै प्रणता वृद्ध्यै सिद्ध्यै कुर्मो नमो नमः।
नैरृत्यै भूभृतां लक्ष्मै शर्वाण्यै ते नमो नमः ॥३॥

Kalyāṇyai praṇatā vṛddhyai siddhyai kurmo namo namaḥ |
Nairṛtyai bhūbhṛtāṃ lakṣmyai śarvāṇyai te namo namaḥ ||3||
Explanation
We bow to the ever-auspicious one who brings growth, success, and all good things. She is Lakshmi for kings and also the power that ends evil. As Sharvani, she is the loving consort of Shiva and the force that dissolves the universe at the right time. This verse teaches us that the Mother gives us everything we need to grow spiritually and materially, and even in endings, she is full of compassion.
दुर्गायै दुर्गपारायै सारायै सर्वकारिण्यै
ख्यात्यै तथैव कृष्णायै धूम्रायै सततं नमः ॥४॥

We offer salutations to Durga, the one who carries us safely across all difficulties. She is the very essence of everything, the doer of all actions, the one who brings fame and also the dark, smoky veil that hides truth when needed. In her loving way, she protects us like a boat in stormy seas and reveals or conceals only to help us grow closer to her.
अतिसौम्यतिरौद्रायै नतास्तस्यै नमो नमः
नमो जगत्प्रतिष्ठायै देव्यै कृत्यै नमो नमः ॥५॥

चितिरूपेण या कृत्स्नमेत द्व्याप्य स्थिता जगत्

Citirūpeṇa yā kṛtsnam etad vyāpya sthitā jagat |

स्तुतासुरैः पूर्वमभीष्ट संश्रयात्तथा
सुरेन्द्रेण दिनेषुसेविता।
करोतुसा नः शुभहेतुरीश्वरी

May the Supreme Goddess, who was praised by the gods in ancient times and served daily by Indra, be the cause of all our good fortune. Let her bring auspiciousness and happiness, and destroy all our troubles and dangers. This loving prayer fills us with hope — the same Mother who helped the gods is ready to help us too!
या साम्प्रतं चोद्धतदैत्यतापितै
रस्माभिरीशाचसुरैर्नमश्यते।
याच स्मता तत्क्षण मेव हन्ति नः

Yā sāmprataṃ coddhata daitya tāpitaiḥ |
Asmābhir īśā ca surair namasyate |
