In our last episode (BE 5: India’s Nuclear Journey – From Quiet Progress to Bold Triumph), we saw how India quietly built a full nuclear programme after the 1974 Smiling Buddha test. For 24 long years, our scientists worked in silence, facing sanctions. They finished everything – designs, fuel, safety systems – but didn’t test it out loud.
Then came… the boldest step of all. Atal Bihari Vajpayee had earlier declared that if re-voted to power, his government would induct nuclear weapons and declare India’s might to gather respect. Soon after assuming power in March 1998, Vajpayee organized a discussion with Abdul Kalam and Chidambaram to conduct nuclear tests.
Today, in the simplest words possible, let’s understand Operation Shakti – also called Pokhran II – the moment India stood up and told the world: “We are a full nuclear power.”
Why 1998? The Perfect (and Secret) Time
By 1998, India had everything ready.
Our scientists had already designed bombs that could work – from small ones to huge thermonuclear (super-powerful) ones.
But the world was watching closely, and many countries didn’t want India to become strong.
Then a new Prime Minister came – Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
He understood one simple thing: India must protect itself. No more waiting.
In March 1998, he gave the secret green signal.
The mission got a beautiful name: Operation Shakti (Shakti means power or energy in Sanskrit).
The Secret Desert Drama at Pokhran
Pokhran, Rajasthan – the same hot, sandy place where Smiling Buddha happened in 1974.
This time, it was even more careful.
- Scientists and soldiers wore army uniforms and used code names (Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam was called “Major General Prithviraj”).
- They worked only at odd hours so spy satellites wouldn’t notice.
- Trucks moved at night. Fake stories were spread to confuse everyone.
- The desert was covered with nets and sand to hide everything.
Only a tiny group of top scientists from BARC (Bhabha Atomic Research Centre), DRDO (Defence Research and Development Organisation), and AEC (Atomic Energy Commission) knew the full plan. Everyone else just followed orders.
The Historic Days – May 11 and 13, 1998
On 11 May 1998 at 3:45 pm, deep under the desert, three devices exploded together.
Here’s what happened, super simple:
| Test Name | What it was | Power (in kilotons) | Simple Meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shakti-I | Thermonuclear (advanced) | 45 | Like a super bomb – India proved it could make the strongest kind |
| Shakti-II | Fission bomb | 15 | Regular powerful nuclear bomb |
| Shakti-III | Tactical (small) | 0.2 | For battlefield use if ever needed |
Then on 13 May, two more small tests (0.3 and 0.5 kilotons) were done to collect extra scientific data.
All five tests were underground. No radiation leaked out. The world’s spy satellites were completely fooled!
The Heroes Who Made It Happen
- PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee: The brave leader who said “We will not bow to pressure.”
- Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam: Coordinated everything perfectly – from bombs to missiles that could carry them.
- Dr. R. Chidambaram: Designed the thermonuclear device.
- Dr. Anil Kakodkar: Made sure the bombs were safe and perfect.
- Hundreds of silent scientists and engineers in white coats who worked for years without any fame.
What Did the World Say?
Many countries got angry and put sanctions (punishments) on India.
But Indians across the country lit diyas and celebrated.
For the first time, India openly declared: “We are now a nuclear-weapon state.”
Vajpayee said proudly: “India is now a nuclear weapons power.”
Why This Matters – Even Today
Operation Shakti was not about war. It was about self-respect and safety.
It proved three big things:
- India can stand alone – no need to beg other countries for technology.
- Our scientists are world-class – they built everything indigenously.
- Peace comes from strength – now no one can threaten us easily.
From the quiet years of patience to this loud boom of triumph, India showed the world what real determination looks like.
In the next episodes, we will see what happened after these tests – how our nuclear programme grew even stronger for both energy and security.
Until then, let’s salute the scientists, soldiers, and leaders who made Operation Shakti possible.
Jai Hind!
We are unbreakable because of them.
