Shiva Panchakshara Stotra by Adi Shankaracharya

The Panchakshara Stotram, also known as Shiva Panchakshara Stotra, is a beautiful hymn dedicated to Bhagwan Shiva. It was composed by Adi Shankaracharya. This stotram celebrates the sacred five-syllable mantra “Namah Shivaya” (Na-Ma-Shi-Va-Ya), with each verse praising one syllable while describing the divine qualities of Bhagwan Shiva. It is found in collections of Adi Shankaracharya’s works and is often chanted in Hindu temples and during Shiva worship. This hymn is like a gentle river of devotion, flowing with deep spiritual essence, helping devotees connect with the eternal peace and power of Bhagwan Shiva. It reminds us of Shiva’s boundless compassion, guiding souls toward inner harmony and liberation.

Nagendra-haraya trilochanaya
Bhasmangaragaya maheshvaraya.
Nityaya shuddhaya digambaraya
Tasmai na-karaya namah shivaya. ||1||

This verse sings of the first syllable “Na,” like the soft earth that holds all life. Imagine Bhagwan Shiva adorned with the king of serpents as a garland around his neck, a symbol of his mastery over fears and poisons of the world. His three eyes shine with wisdom—the third eye burning away ignorance like a gentle flame. His body is smeared with sacred ashes, reminding us of the cycle of creation and dissolution, where everything returns to purity. He is the great master, eternal and spotless, wearing the vast sky as his cloth, embracing all directions with infinite love. Bowing to him through this syllable fills the heart with a quiet strength, like roots drawing nourishment from the soil, leading us to feel Shiva’s protective grace in every breath.

Tasmai ma-karaya namah shivaya. ||2||

Here, the syllable “Ma” flows like pure water, cleansing the soul with divine joy. Picture Bhagwan Shiva bathed in the holy waters of the Mandakini river, mixed with fragrant sandal paste, as if the heavens themselves anoint him with peace. He is the lord of Nandi, the devoted bull, and the joyful ganas who dance around him in eternal celebration. Adorned with clusters of mandara flowers and countless blossoms offered in worship, he receives the purest devotion from all beings. This verse whispers of Shiva’s nurturing side, like a motherly embrace that soothes worries and brings fresh blooms of hope. Chanting it invites a wave of serenity, washing away sorrows and awakening a deep, heartfelt connection to the universe’s gentle rhythm.

Shivaya gauri-vadanabja-brinda-
Suryaya dakshadhvara-nashakaya.
Shri-nilakanthaya vrishadhvajaya
Tasmai shi-karaya namah shivaya. ||3||

The syllable “Shi” glows like the warm sun, illuminating the path of goodness and auspiciousness. Envision Bhagwan Shiva as the radiant sun that makes the lotus face of Gauri bloom with beauty and grace, symbolizing how his presence awakens love and harmony in all. He is the destroyer of Daksha’s arrogant sacrifice, teaching humility and the balance of cosmic order with compassionate power. With a blue throat holding the poison of the world to protect creation, and riding the bull as his flag of dharma, he stands as the eternal guardian. This verse evokes a spiritual sunrise in the heart, melting away darkness and filling life with vibrant energy, as if Shiva himself whispers blessings of protection and inner light to every seeker.

Vashishtha-kumbhodbhava-gautamarya
Munindra-devar-chita shekharaya.
Chandrarka-vaishvanara-lochanaya
Tasmai va-karaya namah shivaya. ||4||

In this verse, the syllable “Va” sparkles like sacred fire, purifying and enlightening the mind. See Bhagwan Shiva honored by the greatest sages—Vashishtha, the pot-born Agastya, and Gautama—along with the king of ascetics and gods, who worship the crescent moon adorning his matted locks. His eyes are the moon, sun, and fire, representing the cool calm of night, the bright clarity of day, and the transformative heat of inner wisdom. Like a divine crown, he wears the universe’s elements, guiding devotees through life’s journeys. Chanting this brings a warm glow to the spirit, igniting devotion and wisdom, as if Shiva’s gaze dissolves doubts and kindles an eternal flame of peace within.

Yajna-svarupaya jatadharaya
Pinaka-hastaya sanatanaya.
Divyaya devaya digambaraya
Tasmai ya-karaya namah shivaya. ||5||

The final syllable “Ya” resonates like the timeless sky, vast and unchanging, embodying ultimate truth. Behold Bhagwan Shiva as the very form of yajna, the sacred ritual that sustains the cosmos, with matted hair flowing like rivers of knowledge. In his hand, he holds the mighty Pinaka bow, symbolizing his role as the protector against chaos. He is the ancient one, divine and radiant, clothed in the open directions, free from all illusions. This verse paints Shiva as the eternal essence, inviting us to surrender and find joy in his divine play. It stirs the soul like a gentle breeze, leading to profound freedom and unity with the infinite.

Panchaksharam idam punyam yah pathet shiva-sannidhau.
Shiva-lokam avapnoti shivena saha modate. ||6||

This concluding verse shares the blessed fruit of chanting the Panchakshara Stotram near Bhagwan Shiva. Whoever recites this holy five-syllable hymn with a pure heart in his presence attains the divine realm of Shiva, where eternal joy and companionship with him await. It’s like a promise of spiritual homecoming, where all struggles fade, and the soul dances in blissful union. This stotram, when embraced daily, becomes a bridge to that sacred world, filling life with grace and unending peace.
