The Divine Birth of Varahamula
Imagine a time when the beautiful Kashmir Valley was not land but a vast lake called Satisaras, filled with divine waters. In this ancient tale from the Bhagavata Purana, the earth was in chaos, submerged by a demon named Hiranyaksha. To save creation, Bhagwan Vishnu took the form of Varaha, the mighty Boar. With his powerful tusks, he lifted the earth from the depths and struck a mountain to drain the lake, revealing the sacred land we know today as Varahamula.
This is not just a story—it is the divine history of a land blessed by Vishnu himself. The name Varahamula comes from Sanskrit: Varaha (boar) and Mula (root or molar), meaning “The Boar’s Molar.” This sacred spot marks where Vishnu’s tusk touched the earth, turning water into land and chaos into beauty.
A Sacred Shloka from the Puranas
The Bhagavata Purana (3.13.31) shares this divine moment:
श्रीमद्भागवते (३.१३.३१): वराह रूपधरं विष्णुं सङ्कर्षणमजं हरिम्। नमामि यः पृथिवीं उद्धरति जलनादात् स्वतुङ्गशृङ्गैः॥
Meaning in English:
“I bow to Bhagwan Vishnu, who took the form of Varaha, the unborn Hari, and lifted the earth from the waters with His lofty tusks.”
This shloka reminds us of Vishnu’s grace and the sacredness of the land He created. Varahamula is not just a place—it is a living testament to Hindu dharma and divine intervention.
Kashmir: The Ancient Hindu Heartland
For thousands of years, Kashmir was a shining jewel of Hindu culture. Known as Kashmira Mandala (The Abode of Light), it was a center of learning, spirituality, and devotion. Great sages like Kashyapa, a son of Brahma, are said to have shaped this land. Temples dedicated to Shiva, Vishnu, and Devi dotted the valleys, and the Rajatarangini, an ancient historical text by Kalhana, records the glory of Hindu kings who ruled with wisdom.
The Vishnu Purana and Mahabharata also praise Kashmir as a land of rishis and divine events. It was a place where Hindu traditions flourished, where Sanskrit literature and Shaivism thrived. This was Varahamula, the sacred land where creation itself began.
The Cruel Hands of Invaders
But this divine land faced a dark turn. Starting in the 14th century, invaders brought destruction. Muslim rulers like Sikandar Shah Miri forced Hindus to convert, destroyed temples, and burned Sanskrit texts. The Rajatarangini tells of a time when Brahmins were slaughtered, and the jizya tax was imposed on those who refused to abandon their faith. Hindu shrines, once filled with devotion, were reduced to rubble.
Later, the Durrani invaders added to the suffering with forced conversions, killings, and heavy taxes. Can you imagine the pain of seeing a land of gods turned into a place of fear? The sacredness of Varahamula was buried under cruelty, its name twisted to Baramulla—a shadow of its true identity.
Today: A Land of Divine Turned to Hell
Today, what was once Varahamula, the Sacred Land of the Boar, struggles under ongoing conflict and neglect. The temples are few, the ancient stories are fading, and the land that Vishnu blessed is scarred by violence. How cruel must these invaders have been—and are—to erase a culture so rich? How can we stand by as the divine history of our ancestors is forgotten?
The land still whispers its truth, but the world calls it Baramulla, hiding its sacred roots. This is not just history—it is a wake-up call. The invaders’ cruelty continues in the form of ignorance and disrespect for our heritage.
A Call to Every Hindu
Every Hindu must rise and reclaim this knowledge. Varahamula is not just a name—it is our pride, our history, our soul. Here’s what we can do:
- Learn Our Roots: Read the Puranas and Rajatarangini to understand our ancient glory.
- Spread the Truth: Share the story of Varahamula with family and friends.
- Protect Our Heritage: Support efforts to restore temples and preserve Sanskrit.
- Pray and Reflect: Offer prayers to Bhagwan Vishnu, asking Him to heal this sacred land.
Let us wonder at the cruelty that turned a divine land into a battlefield. Let us awaken to our rich culture and ancient roots. Varahamula calls to us—will we answer? The time is now to honor Vishnu’s gift and restore the Sacred Land of the Boar to its rightful glory!
